WDSS Workshops

Limit capacity is 35 participants per workshop

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences is offering the following in-person workshops.

Intro to R Workshop - Tuesday, February 21st - from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Physics & Astronomy Building- Room 117

Introduction to R is a 3-hour workshop introducing basic programming concepts in R and learning to execute data manipulations, calculations, statistical analyses, and produce useful graphs and numeric summaries. Participants will also learn to write simple functions that can be used to automate analyses and examine the use of R packages to expand R’s basic capabilities.

No prior programming knowledge is necessary. The workshop is hands-on and participants will follow along with all of the coding. Participants will need to have R, then RStudio installed on their own computers. R is the programming language itself and must be installed first (https://cran.r-project.org/). RStudio Desktop provides a more friendly programming environment and is used in conjunction with R (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/).

Intermediate R - Friday, February 24th - from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Physics & Astronomy Building- Room 117

Intermediate R is a 3-hour workshop where we will work through example analyses from start to finish. This includes preparing and cleaning data, plotting, modelling (t-tests, linear models, logistic regression, etc.), and presentation. As we go, we will discuss the way R handles different symbols, syntax, functions, and arguments. Understanding these concepts will allow the user to expand their usage of R more quickly and extend their knowledge to new situations. We will also stress the importance of good coding habits, effective use of graphical methods, and using help files. Participants will follow along with all of the coding and leave the workshop with a file that can be easily modified to fit many different situations.

This workshop is suitable for people with a basic understanding of R (basic use of data frames, vectors, lists, etc). Attending the Introduction to R Workshop is sufficient to prepare you for this one. Participants will need to have both R and RStudio installed on their own computers.  R is programming language itself and must be installed first (https://cran.r-project.org/). RStudio Desktop provides a more friendly programming environment and is used in conjunction with R (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/).

Intro to Python Workshop - Friday, February 24th - from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Physics & Astronomy Building- Room 150

Introduction to Python workshop is a 3-hour workshop introducing basic programming concepts in Python and learning to perform data manipulations, calculations, statistical analyses, and produce useful graphs and numeric summaries.
