R Workshops

The workshop will be conducted virtually via Zoom.

Workshop participants will be e-mailed a Zoom link prior to the workshop.

R is an open source statistical package for data analytics and graphics that is widely used in both academia and industry. It is freely available, well-supported, powerful and flexible, making it one of the most used of all programming languages.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences is offering two hands-on R workshops, to be delivered virtually via Zoom on February 22 - 24, 2022. The Introduction to R Workshop is for those with no prior experience with R to learn the basics of using R for data, statistical, or graphical analyses. The Intermediate R Workshop will extend from the introductory workshop and implement strategies to use and understand R more effectively. Those with a basic knowledge of R are welcome to attend the Intermediate workshop as well.

Intro to R Workshop - Tuesday, February 22nd from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Introduction to R is a 3-hour workshop introducing basic programming concepts in R and learning to execute data manipulations, calculations, statistical analyses, and produce useful graphs and numeric summaries. Participants will also learn to write simple functions that can be used to automate analyses and examine the use of R packages to expand R’s basic capabilities.

No prior programming knowledge is necessary. The workshop is hands-on and participants will follow along with all of the coding. Participants will need to have R, then RStudio installed on their own computers. R is the programming language itself and must be installed first (https://cran.r-project.org/). RStudio Desktop provides a more friendly programming environment and is used in conjunction with R (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/).

Intro to Python Workshop - Wednesday, February 23rd from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Introduction to Python workshop is a 3-hour workshop introducing basic programming concepts in Python and learning to perform data manipulations, calculations, statistical analyses, and produce useful graphs and numeric summaries.

Intermediate R - Thursday, February 24th from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Intermediate R is a 4-hour workshop where we will work through example analyses from start to finish. This includes preparing and cleaning data, plotting, modelling (t-tests, linear models, logistic regression, etc.), and presentation. As we go, we will discuss the way R handles different symbols, syntax, functions, and arguments. Understanding these concepts will allow the user to expand their usage of R more quickly and extend their knowledge to new situations. We will also stress the importance of good coding habits, effective use of graphical methods, and using help files. Participants will follow along with all of the coding and leave the workshop with a file that can be easily modified to fit many different situations.

This workshop is suitable for people with a basic understanding of R (basic use of data frames, vectors, lists, etc). Attending the Introduction to R Workshop is sufficient to prepare you for this one. Participants will need to have both R and RStudio installed on their own computers.  R is programming language itself and must be installed first (https://cran.r-project.org/). RStudio Desktop provides a more friendly programming environment and is used in conjunction with R (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/).
